Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements made by skipper Ben Stokes about the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made this message in multiple interviews following his team's loss in the second Ashes series against the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had allowed his message to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," remarked the England leader.

But, following Crawley made 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "weak men" comment after England were beaten in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The team afterwards took a holiday to Noosa between the second and third matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his team had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley stated the guidance from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their previous three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," noted the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we could do something special entering this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – left England six down for 207 chasing a daunting total of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia need just four more wickets on the final day to move to an insurmountable three-nil advantage after three matches played.

Defeat will extend the English team's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes defeat.

The current battle will be completed in only 11 days of play – with England fell the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," said the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a formidable side. It was always going to be tough coming here to face them. They entered as the front-runners and they've proven why."

Pope's Position In Question

Although the opener's performance in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his immediate future in the side, Pope looks under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in England's second knock on Saturday, adding to his poor record against the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a fifty and averages just 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

However, Crawley said any notion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is noise externally. There's no discussion of that nature on Ollie in the camp," Crawley finished.
