Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

The Australian selection chief George Bailey has confirmed that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series kicking off on the 21st of November in Perth.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about his chances of being involved.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and there are permutations around that, not only his injury, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a major part. With luck from the opening match. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from three Australian summers in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the contest.

The selector indicated that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against India as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and stated that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches regardless. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for another day, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
